This technique is intended in particular for modernisation of Prep-Lap and Pres-Lap type welding machines. It is based on a laser device consisting of a laser welding  head, two laser cuttings heads and a Yag type TRUMPF laser source which is added to the resistance seam welding technology of these welding machines.

The laser device can be used not only for laser welding but also for laser cutting. This cutting is of considerably higher quality than shear cutting, greatly improving the quality of the weld which will then be made. Furthermore, the laser cutting speeds are higher and enable a reduced cycle time.

For example, laser cutting, laser welding and annealing with the welding  disc in a single pass can be carried out in 26 seconds excluding clamping.

Thanks to this technology, the equipment has two welding technologies (resistance and laser) which enable it both to handle a wide range of steel qualities and thicknesses and to give the line unrivalled continuity by considerably reducing the number and duration of line shutdowns. This is because it is very easy to switch from one technology to the other.

In addition, a spare laser  cutting head  device is available as an option. This makes it possible to change the  cutting heads in only a few minutes and continue production

The hybrid revamping option also presents other advantages:

  • Modernising an old machine with new technology is much more economical than purchasing new equipment for the same level of performance and the start-up time is considerably reduced;
  • No civil engineering work is necessary given that the basic equipment is retained;
  • After the mechanical changes, all the resistance welding parameters are retained and the laser parameters are activated;
  • The operation takes at most one month on site;
  • The operator receives only additional training in the laser process.
